simple black skirts

I bought a stretchy black pencil skirt from J. Crew back in 1997 or so and wore it to every graduation, fancy family dinner, and job interview for about a decade. The elastic waistband finally gave out and I've been keeping my eye out for a good replacement ever since.

This season's got some good ones:

on the bandwagon

I can't wait for this:
I was late getting on the Franzen bandwagon. I just read The Corrections (and was duly swept away) after reading this fantastic short story of his in The New Yorker. Turns out the short story is an excerpt from his new book, Freedom

As part of their cover feature on Franzen, TIME asked him to name five books that have inspired him. I'm really interested in reading The Greenlanders, The House of Mirth and East of Eden after reading his brief descriptions.

Oh, looks like this guy might be reading Freedom, too.

stella

I love this photo of Stella Tennant wearing a vintage John Galliano dress. Drapey and calm, with polka dots.
photo: Joshua Bright, from the August issue of Vogue.

Her style hasn't changed too much, has it?
Here she is in Vogue, c. 1996.

This is one of my favorite pictures of my mom. When we were growing up, I never saw any photos of her at this age. She'd hidden them away, deep, deep in the attic. When she finally brought them out for me to view, I got to see my mom in her early twenties, sporting mini dresses and headscarves and, at one point, a Bob Dylan haircut. I was so happy to see some confidence and perhaps even a bit of swagger in some of the photos. When I saw this photo in particular, I was really moved by her adorableness, and also by what she's wearing: the white dress is  something I would love to wear myself. I love the simple shape, the white lace, the scoop-necked, short-hemmed cut. After years of mother-daughter fighting over clothing (culminating in her secretly throwing out my favorite jeans back in 1995), it was nice to come across this photo and see our tastes overlap so completely.

I recently bought this dress from the Beacon's Closet online shop.
It needs a lot of work (they didn't list that the hem was held up by masking tape, or that one of the darts needs mending), but whenever it's fixed, and I finally get to wear it, I'll think of my mom.

Final white dress: Winona Ryder in Reality Bites.
I love how she's dressed in this movie. I was trying to find a clip of this scene -- she comes out dressed like this and Troy says she looks like a doily -- but I found this fan video instead...and, well, I watched the whole thing.

gardening tools

I realized my favorite soaps and lotions all smell like mint, rosemary and basil: Mrs. Meyer's basil hand and dish soapC.O. Bigelow rosemary mint lotion, and  Saipua gardener's soap.

I bought a bunch of Saipua soaps about a month ago, finally giving in to the allure of Saipua! They're all beautiful, but the smell of this one was instantly my favorite. I haven't even opened it up yet, but its scent, especially during the heat wave, filled up my studio with the best herbal mint smell.

I can't wait to use it. Although then I'll miss having the smell in my studio.

Speaking of gardening...
Claire Nereim has a beautiful new poster of seasonal vegetables.
I missed out on her last one, so I'd probably better grab one of these or else I'll be kicking myself for not having those awesome tomatoes nearby.
